Kansas~The Sunflower State

Kansas is the sunflower state...we love our sunflowers.
Fields are planted all over the state.
This one is locally well known. It's near Lawrence/Tonganoxie, Ks., an easy drive from Kansas City. For you all that are unfamiliar with Lawrence, Ks...think basketball~The Kansas Jayhawks!!! anyway...
We follow the field progress and are "friends" with the farm on facebook.
They told us when the fields were planted, first growth, height, and the estimated time the flowers will bloom.
Hundreds show up. I got there at 6am...barely found a parking spot.
Photographers galore, both amateur and the pros. You can tell when someone has been there before, they bring ladders and step stools.
People are taking selfies, senior pics, plain ole portraits, engagement photos and family photos. I've seen people bring their pets and pose them..those are always so cute.
People are friendly. We loan our ladders to the newbies, duck down to get out of others photos, hold ugly plants out of the way of a photo shot, etc...it's just fun...
The owners remind us that this is really a farm field. There are no restrooms.
They allow us to pick the blooms, though I've seen few actually being picked. People are very respectful. The owners have also posted contribution boxes around. They don't make a big deal out of it, but it is mentioned that "this is a working farm"...
The blooms last several days, then start getting buggy and not so pretty.
Drones flew over along with several small planes.
It was hot and humid.
The place is packed from sunrise to sunset and I've seen some beautiful shots.
I was home by 9am...and happy with several of my shots.
Kansas recognized the sunflower as official state flower and floral emblem in 1903 (the sunflower is also featured on the Kansas state quarter, state flag, and the nickname for Kansas is The Sunflower State.
This was a beautiful weekend to take photos in Kansas.
